Media,

We just wanted to clarify a couple of things that was stated earlier today about the Kutz 4 Kidz event. The main purpose of the event was to give children haircuts for school. The secondary purpose was to give them free school supplies. The Albuquerque Police Department worked in partnership with Dream Big, KBanks Productions and Elite Music in order to make this event a success. Thanks to this partnership, about  1,000 children received free haircuts today and were able to enjoy the entertainment, food and positive interactions with police officers. Through donations we were able to supply about 500 kids with backpacks and school supplies. Next year organizers plan to have a larger event in order to give more children haircuts. We would also like to thank the media for their coverage of the event. Without the coverage before and during we would not have seen such a large turnout.

Kutz 4 Kidz Event August 12th

Dream Big & Albuquerque Police Department

Presents

The 2012 Kutz 4 Kidz Back to School Event

Dream Big & the Albuquerque Police Department invite you to participate in the second annual "Kutz 4 Kidz Back to School Event" to benefit underprivileged children in our community.

This exciting event will be held August 12th, 2012 at The APD Police Academy from 9:00am-6:00pm.

This is a charity event that will provide free professional haircuts, backpacks, and school supplies for underprivileged children, while building relationships with the men and women who protect their lives every day.

For many children, it is the first time in their life where they can have a positive interaction with a Police Officer.  In addition to fostering positive relationships with local law enforcement, children will be given the supplies needed to begin their school year.  This will not only help with their self-confidence but show them that there are people in the community who want to see them succeed and know that they matter.

The event will also include a free BBQ, demonstrations of APD's specialized units, live youth entertainment, autographs from UFC Fighters & Local/National Athletes, Car Show, and tons of other family friendly activities for all participants & their families.

Businesses and individuals who are interested in helping out with this cause are welcome and encouraged to take part in fundraising efforts….

Here are a couple of ways  to help!

1)    Individuals can make smaller donations (they can make the donation online) www.kutz4kidz.org

2)    Start a school supply drive , here is a sample list of school supplies needed.

We are counting on community partners to make this event as successful as possible.

APD Reacts to Aurora Movie Theatre Shootings

In light of the Aurora movie theatre shootings and on behalf of the Albuquerque Police Department, Police Chief, Ray Schultz, would like to extend deepest condolences to the families of the victims.  Having experience a similar tragedy here in Albuquerque in the 2010 Emcore shootings, Chief Schultz and APD express empathy for all who have been touched by this terrible event.  The Albuquerque Police Department be conducting escalated security at all movie theaters throughout the weekend in order to offer peace of mind to moviegoers.

In addition, here are some tips to the private sector in order to make businesses a safer place and prevent similar incidents:

∙  Keep all emergency plans up to date

∙  Prepare ahead of time and understand indicators of threats to include

            ∙  Surveillance of potential targets

∙  Threats received by phone, email or postal mail

∙  Clearly defined photographing or videotaping facilities, security posts and entry/exit posts

∙  Plans for special events, ceremonies, or activities drawing large crowds

∙  Questioning of employees associating with suspicious individuals

            ∙  Marking camera locations

∙  Possession of fraudulent IDs, blueprints, evacuation plans

∙  Bulky clothing used to conceal explosive devices or small arm weapons

∙  Unattended backpacks, briefcases, duffel bags, boxes or other items

∙  Suspicious vehicles (unattended, close proximity to facility, parked illegally, etc.)

∙  Nervous behavior (limited eye contact, profuse sweating, avoidance of security officials, etc.)

∙  Train all staff to understand the signs of someone conducting surveillance and signs of suspicious behavior.  Make sure all new staff members are trained on emergency situations

∙  Confirm with staff the rules about parking near entry points or around the facility. Consider contracting a towing company to manage parking violators

∙  Confirm with staff that they must report all suspicious activity to law enforcement and management

∙  Outreach to adjacent and neighboring properties to share information regarding suspicious activity

∙  Confirm all security systems are operating effectively, recording and if possible, constantly monitored for suspicious activity

∙  Confirm all fire and life safety systems are operations and permits are current

∙  Confirm all security and front of house personnel have first aid training

∙  Confirm all exit doors (non public entrances) lock from the outside immediately upon closure.  If possible, have a staff member monitor exterior doors

∙  Consider implementing a limitation on the carrying of backpacks/gym bags, etc. into public assembly areas.

Results of Operation Safe Workplace

OPERATION SAFE WORKPLACE:

APD has developed a partnership with businesses in Albuquerque and a
curriculum to prevent workplace violence. In a collaborative effort
between APD and the business community, Sgt. Paul Szych, Lt. Mike
Archibeque and Dr. Troy Rodgers have been conducting ongoing "Operation
Safe Workplace" seminars. The training is in response to both community
and business leaders requesting APD's assistance in light of past
workplace violence incidents. Our training focuses on:

PART 1 - Predicting/preventing high-lethality events (Sgt. Szych)
PART 2 - Active Shooter (Lt. Archibeque)
PART 3 - Who is most likely to become violent (Dr. Rodgers)

Thanks to Robert Fox of the APD Video Unit, we now have all three
presentations on DVD ready for dissemination.

Any area command receiving corporate requests for workplace violence
training can request these DVD's to provide to those businesses. If
your corporation would like a copy of this DVD please contact your local
area command substation for a copy.

APD Junior Police Academy

The Summer of 2012 APD Junior Police Academy is underway !

The APD Academy is hosting the Jr. Police Academy for 2012 and the program is in its final week for this summer.  Community Children ranging in age from 7-17 years have signed up to participate in this year’s Academy.  The children and youth are with Academy instructors daily from 8:00 am – to 4:00 pm.  The children do daily physical training with the staff, participate in hands-on activities, and learn about police work directly from Officers.  The children also get an opportunity to visit the Juvenile Detention Center to learn about Juvenile crime and penalties.

The APD Academy provides this free week-long course to the participants.  Officers volunteer their time to come teach the students and do demonstrations.  Some of those volunteers have come in from specialized units including, SWAT, K-9, Horse Mounted Unit and Gangs to name a few.  The staff is made up of volunteers and enlists the assistance of volunteer Teen Mentors as well.

Overall, this is a great opportunity for the community children and youth to ask questions, learn and share exciting experiences with their local APD officers.  It is also an opportunity for the Officers to do some positive outreach and spend time with these great children.
