APD Junior Police Academy

The Summer of 2012 APD Junior Police Academy is underway !

The APD Academy is hosting the Jr. Police Academy for 2012 and the program is in its final week for this summer.  Community Children ranging in age from 7-17 years have signed up to participate in this year’s Academy.  The children and youth are with Academy instructors daily from 8:00 am – to 4:00 pm.  The children do daily physical training with the staff, participate in hands-on activities, and learn about police work directly from Officers.  The children also get an opportunity to visit the Juvenile Detention Center to learn about Juvenile crime and penalties.

The APD Academy provides this free week-long course to the participants.  Officers volunteer their time to come teach the students and do demonstrations.  Some of those volunteers have come in from specialized units including, SWAT, K-9, Horse Mounted Unit and Gangs to name a few.  The staff is made up of volunteers and enlists the assistance of volunteer Teen Mentors as well.

Overall, this is a great opportunity for the community children and youth to ask questions, learn and share exciting experiences with their local APD officers.  It is also an opportunity for the Officers to do some positive outreach and spend time with these great children.
